When people think of dermatology, they tend to associate conditions of the skin. Acne, wrinkles, eczema, rosacea, and many other skin ailments are entrusted to dermatologists for treatment. However, this field of medicine also covers anything to do with the nails and hair. When people endure sudden hair loss, scalp irritation, genetic baldness, etc. they consult a dermatologist to find answers.
Tom Joyner Asks About Hair Transplant
The Tom Joyner Radio Show welcomed Dr. Umar as the guest on their “Get Well Wednesday” segment this week. Dr. Umar is certified by the American Academy of Dermatology. This means he has extensive knowledge and experience treating patients for their concerns with regard to skin health as well as hair health. Through his years of practice, he has become a world-leading surgeon of today’s most prominent hair transplant method—follicular unit extraction. His expertise in reversing severe baldness draws patients from all over the world and makes him an authority in the field, for interviews like this one.
An estimated 8 million listeners tuned in to the top rated African American radio show, which also posted the segment on its website. Tom Joyner’s first question for the doctor was a personal one. “Doc, are you bald?” he asked. To which Dr. Umar answered yes, revealing the origin of his interest in hair restoration. The interview went on to cover many questions and insights into hair transplant, including where the donor hair comes from, if it’s painful, how long it takes, the success rate, and whether there’s an expiration for candidacy.
Joyner also wanted to know if Dr. Umar has treated any celebrities, with comedic inquiry about whether eyebrow transplant would work for Whoopi Goldberg. The answers were yes to both (although the doctor is not at liberty to reveal the names of patients—celebrities or otherwise.) Co-host Sybil Wilkes also asked some questions of her own. Her inquiries concerned female hair loss and whether hair transplant is becoming more popular for women.
Listen to the interview to hear all of Dr. Umar’s answers, including whether or not he could restore LeBron James’ hair, why homeless people always seem to have a full scalp, and side effects of the surgery.
Hair Transplant Radio Interview Q&A
After the segment, the lines were inundated with text messages following Joyner’s prompt to text 646464 with further questions for the doctor. A few of the questions and answers were:
How do you get woman’s temple hair back? Temple loss is often from a condition called traction alopecia. This results from certain grooming practices eg braiding, weaves, pony tails etc which exert a pulling force on the hair roots. The first measure iso t stop these practices. Next is to use hair growth promoters. In some cases, surgery is performed to restore the hair. We currently are working on a permanent non surgical solution for this condition.
Can you transfer hair from one person to another?
No. The body would reject it.
Can you perm hair after transplant or natural style is the only style you would be able to wear?
You can perm, relax, dye and do whatever you would normally do to your natural hair to the transplanted hair. They are one and the same. They are permanent and would grow and behave like your natural hair.
What is the difference between your procedure and others such as Mosley or HRS? How do we contact you?
My procedure is linear scar free. I can also restore severely bald states that Bosley or HRS would probably not attempt.
