Fine Touch Dermatology offers laser procedures as an option for removing leg veins . The main advantages that lasers offer are:
- High levels of precision
- Minimal invasiveness
We typically use this form of treatment for smaller blood vessels that are less than 3mm in diameter. Due to their size, they are harder to address with injections. However, laser energy offers a more accurate targeting system so that patients can see complete clearance of unsightly veins.
How Do Lasers Get Rid Of Leg Veins?
In general, every laser system relies on two factors to perform a specific job:
(1) A specific wavelength
(2) A target chromophore in the body which absorbs the wavelength.
When it comes to removing leg veins, the laser wavelength must be absorbed by an iron compound in the blood called hemoglobin which transports oxygen. This is how it enters the blood vessels.
Once inside, the laser energy proceeds to damage the inner lining, which is called the endothelium. This causes the blood vessel to seal off so that it is no longer functional. It is then broken down by the body and carried away from the skin’s surface until it is no longer visible.
The Best Lasers For Clearing Unwanted Veins In The Legs
Dr. Umar led a 2002 research study on lasers and leg veins. The goal was to compare the performance of various forms of wavelengths. This included:
(1) 810nm (Diode)
(2) 755nm (Alexandrite)
(3) Long pulse 1064nm (Nd:YAG)
The research concluded that 1064 was the most effective wavelength among the three laser energies. Compared to the other two, it is absorbed at a much greater extent by oxygenated hemoglobin. Therefore, it is better at targeting and helping to clear away leg veins that are seen on the surface.
Laser Procedures for Leg Veins At Fine Touch Dermatology
Here at Fine Touch Dermatology, we use the Gentle YAG laser for the removal of small blood vessels on the legs, such as spider veins.
This system uses the 1064nm wavelength which is delivered as a long pulse to maximize the amount of energy that can safely be delivered to the unwanted leg veins.
Here is an example of an FTD patient who was able to experience a successful outcome with the Gentle YAG for getting rid of veins on the back of her legs.
As you can see from the photos below, the original blood vessels approximated the 3mm criteria that we recommend for using this laser.
Dr. Umar was able to achieve complete clearance of the reddish brown blood vessels that she wanted to get rid of.
