Chemexfoliation or derma-peeling, also known as chemical peels, is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin. In this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, causing it to ‘blister’ and eventually peel off. The new and rejuvenated skin then becomes smoother and less wrinkled than old skin.

Chemical peels can be performed on the face, neck and hands. They are also used to reduce fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth, treats wrinkles caused by sun damage, aging and family history, treat certain types of acne, improve the appearance of mild scarring, reduce age spots, freckles and dark patches due to pregnancy or taking birth control pills (melasma), and improves the look and feel of skin that is dull in texture and color.

Performing a chemical peel is an outpatient procedure. When doing so, the skin is thoroughly cleansed with an agent that removes excess oils, while the eyes and hair is protected.

So who is a good candidate for a chemical peel? Usually, far-skinned and light-haired patients are ideal candidates for the chemical peel procedure. However, darker skin types may also have good results; with both running a risk of an uneven skin tone after the procedure is done.
