Many sites use the term, “pillow face” when describing celebrity faces that look like they’ve been injected with too much soft tissue filler. Examples include Juvederm, Radiesse and Restylane.

It is easy for just about anyone to recognize this appearance. Yet it is more difficult to define.

Wayne Goss, a You Tube makeup artist made some interesting statements about celebrity pillow faces.

“ Beauty now is very different from what it used to be. In nowhere in history has the faces we’re seeing ever existed before. This very frozen, very severe…swollen face where the cheeks are being overly plumped out and the jawline is going with it, creating this overly plump….pillow face.”

Overfilled celebrity faces also look odd when the patient has very low levels of body fat. Being very thin with a swollen looking face appears very unnatural.  According to different sites, some of the stars who look like they may have received too much filler include: Ashley Judd, Madonna (in recent previous years),  Lindsey Lohan and Sharon Osbourne.

Causes of Celebrity Pillow Faces

Those who are rich and famous are able to hire the best doctors. And it seems that many physicians will do their best to take more of a problem solving approach (as opposed to an instinctive aesthetic perspective)  to correct the manifestations of aging.

There is a lot of career pressure for celebrity faces to stay looking as young as possible. These images are a selling factor in the entertainment industry.  So with the best of intentions, many doctors will do what they can to help these patients achieve a youthful looking appearance.

In the realm of cosmetic procedures, young and beautiful faces are characterized by volume and  proportions called “the triangle of beauty.” Two points are created by the cheeks. And the vertex is at the chin. The sides are roughly of equal length.

Celebrity Face Treatment

Doctors who treat celebrity faces use a concept called the triangle of beauty which is created by the two cheekbones and the tip of the chin.*

In trying to recreate these qualities of youth, the physicians who over inject these celebrity faces are trying to accomplish objectives such as:

1) restoring lost volume.

2) filling the cheeks and jawline  to recreate the triangle of beauty through high cheekbones that meet a well defined chin.

The ideal approach to avoid looking overfilled is to use a conservative amount of filler.  More injection can always be added later. Spacing out sessions in this way can help create a more objective perspective on how attractive the patient looks.
