Collagen is the structural protein in the skin of individuals. When collagen is damaged, abnormal construction of elastin occurs. Elastin is the protein that allows facial skin tissue to stretch. When sunlight damages the skin, it naturally tries to repair itself by producing enzymes called metalloproteins. The enzymes unintentionally can do even further damage to the collagen, ultimately resulting in wrinkles.
