Everyone in some form has encountered some kind of skin discomfort or irritation. What is also common are skin diseases. Many people don’t realize they are affected with skin disease, so here is a more specific list tailoring skin problems you may or may not possess.

Psoriasis is a common skin disease considered to be chronic, but non-contagious. Although the name is derived from the Greek word meaning ‘itching,’ the biggest problem is not that. Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition which tends to run in families and affects between 1-3% of the population, varying from mild to severe.

Generally appearing on skin of knees, elbows and scalp in the form of red patches with flakey white buildup, Psoriasis also affects the nails and joints as well.  Consequently, people suffering from psoriasis not only experience itching and pain, but psychological one’s as well including depression or decreased level of self-esteem due to the unsatisfactory look of the skin.

Currently, the cause of psoriasis is unknown. However, there are treatments to help alleviate the pains associated with psoriasis. Here are a few, easy  tips to temporarily scratch psoriasis out:

*If you have psoriasis of the scalp, wash your hair often.

*Do not get sunburned since psoriasis may settle in areas of injured skin.

*Psoriasis causes the skin to lose water to the environment, so lubricate the areas of psoriasis with liberal amounts of Vaseline

*Mild psoriasis can be treated effectively with cortisone ointments.
