This patient had two static vertical lines between her brows. She did not want to use Botox to treat the muscles responsible for causing these frown lines. Instead she chose to just address these fine lines.
Belotero was used to get rid of them. There are three product variations. However the FDA approved one of them, Belotero Balance, for use in the United States.
Belotero is made of hyaluronic acid, like Juvederm and Restylane. However, it is processed using a new technology called Cohesive Polydensified Matrix. This results in a different form of cross linking among the molecules. Belotero has unique properties that allow it to be injected close to the skin’s surface.
Former Challenges of Using Dermal Fillers To Get Rid Of Fine Lines
Prior to the availability of Belotero, dermal fillers could not be used to fill fine lines without complications. Examples include:
1. Tyndall Effect
Older forms of hyaluronic acid fillers are particulate in nature. They are suspended in the injection solution, forming a colloid. When light passes through, it will refract and scatter in different directions, creating a bluish hue. This is why fillers like Juvederm and Restylane cannot be injected superficially to treat lines like the ones shown in the photo above. They have to be injected deep beneath the skin. However this will not help with surface creases.
2. Formation of lumps
Suspensions of particles have the tendency to clump. This is another reason why these dermal fillers are not able to be injected superficially.
Los Angeles Belotero- A “Newer Generation” of Dermal Fillers
The cross linking process involved in producing Belotero does not result in particulate matter. Instead, it creates a monophasic compound which is light and elastic. Belotero can be injected close to the surface and distribute very evenly. It will fill in fine lines and create treated and untreated areas rather seamlessly.
