Some patients wonder if Botox can be used to get rid of laugh lines. Although Botox has produced remarkable results in improving the appearance of crows feet, frown lines between the brows and horizontal forehead wrinkles, the injection is not ideal for applications around the mouth area. The main reason is because we use these muscles for day to day functions like speaking and eating.
Botox Is Not Safe for Treating Laugh Lines
Although Botox is commonly regarded as a wrinkle treatment, it does not target actual wrinkles on the skin, but rather the muscles which contribute to the development of creases and grooves. In order to affect these muscles, Botox must work to prevent the associated nerves from releasing a neurochemical called acetylcholine which binds to receptors on the muscles causing them to contract.
Keeping the muscles around the mouth in a perpetual relaxed state is certainly not recommended as the way to improve the appearance of laugh lines. Instead of using Botox, a filler like Radiesse would be a much better option. Radiesse is made of microscopic calcium based particles which provides necessary firmness and structural support as needed. Not only will it fill in the laugh lines, it can also improve the appearance of nasolabial folds and any droopiness or sagging in this area.
Use of A Dermal Filler For Improving Laugh Lines
