Non-surgical chin augmentation can help improve the appearance of the profile.*

It might not be completely obvious, but the shape of your chin significantly affects the attractiveness of your profile. When looking at photos, most people will favorably judge a strong chin compared to one that is receding or weak.

Celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Angelina Jolie and Madonna are speculated to have chin implants. While this may or may not be fact, the attractiveness of their profiles due to their long jawlines cannot be denied.

A basic rule of thumb in aesthetics is that the chin should extend close to the outer point of the lower lip. In men, this characteristic gives their appearance a stronger sense of authority and masculinity. For women, having more of a classic looking chin adds a high level of elegance to their facial contour.

While chin reconstruction can be accomplished through surgery, there is also non-surgical chin augmentation to enhance the profile. This is done through dermal fillers.

Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation

Radiesse, a calcium based injection, can create non-surgical structure changes to facial features. Once it is beneath the skin’s surface, it creates a scaffold that promotes collagen synthesis. It is ideal as an injection for reshaping the chin.

Juvederm and Restylane are both forms of hyaluronic acid, which are used in cosmetic procedures to augment tissue. They can be used in some cases for chin augmentation. However the ultimate decision on what dermal filler to use really depends on the specific objective of the  treatment.

Dermal fillers are not permanent.  Radiesse lasts about 12-18 months.  Juvederm lasts between 4-6 months. Restylane lasts between 6-9 months.  Facial muscles change over time with age, injections can ensure that the shape of the chin can adapt to these modifications.

Another advantage associated with non-surgical chin augmentation is that there is no risk of infections or migration with dermal fillers.

Surgical Implants

The traditional way to reshape the chin is through surgical implants, which are permanent. Although these occurrences are rare, they can shift their position along the jaw bone.  As facial muscles change, the implant can give a stiff and unnatural appearance with some individuals.

With other individuals, implants may be more advantageous for their unique circumstances.

Non-surgical chin augmentation can be considered once the patient has carefully weighed the pros and cons of whether of not to undergo surgery.  If permanent structural change is not desired, fillers like Radiesse can be a great alternative.
