Fraxel Results and Different Laser Systems

Fraxel is a brand name derived from the word, fractionated. The basic concept behind a fractionated laser is that it can target specific areas of the skin while leaving healthy surrounding tissue alone.  Fraxel results are often quite impressive as patients notice real changes in their skin. And recovery time is reduced because it is not necessary to treat the entire face.

Specific Fraxel systems include:

1)      Fraxel Repair is a CO2 laser that creates vertical columns of intense light energy in the skin.  The tissue within these columns becomes vaporized.  Fraxel results from this laser occur by shrinking and tightening the skin’s surface area. Because it reaches deeper layers, new collagen fibers are produced due to the heat that is applied to the dermis. Fraxel Repair is only recommended for individuals with very fair skin.

2)      Fraxel Dual uses two wavelength modalities. This includes the 1550nm and the 1927nm. These wavelengths reach the dermis to activate natural collagen synthesizing processes. Fraxel results from the Dual system can improve the appearance of acne scars and age spots with ongoing treatments.

Fraxel Results and Different Skin Tones

Skin with higher levels of melanin is a common concern with cosmetic lasers. Although lasers use light energy, it converts to heat when it enters the skin. Melanin, which is a natural pigment, easily absorbs laser wavelengths.  So patients with more melanin in their skin will face the risk of overheating.

The skin responds to this trauma by creating scar tissue.

Melanin does not readily absorb the 1550 and 1927nm wavelengths of Fraxel Dual. These Fraxel results are safe for darker skin tones.  The laser can focus on targeting  relevant areas without damaging surrounding skin tissue.
