Restylane is an injectable dermal filler to temporarily smooth skin, increase volume in areas of fat loss and diminish wrinkles. It is a hyaluronic acid formulation approved by the FDA to treat facial fold and wrinkles and for lip augmentation. The specific formulation is known as NASHA, which was the first non-animal derived hyaluronic acid injection.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar compound found in the body. It is found in connective tissue and a primary function is lubrication to protect cells. Its hydrating properties allow binding to water molecules 1,000 times more than its weight. It also binds to collagen and elastic. All of these factors assist in adding volume and fullness to the skin.

Restylane-1

Restylane is a hyaluronic acid filler that helps fill lines and add volume to tissue.

HOW RESTYLANE WORKS

Restylane works two fold. At the injection site, Restylane adds volume. The increased fullness diminishes the appearance of wrinkles. It also has hydrating properties and binds to water molecules to sustain fullness.  Additionally, Restylane promotes more collagen production.

With age, collagen production decreases. Fibroblasts in younger individuals stretch, which prompts collagen production. Fibroblasts in older individuals stretch less so collagen production decreases. This leads the creases eventually turning to permanent wrinkles and skin folds. Restylane prompts the fibroblasts to increase stretching, which in turn increases collagen production.

Another difference in older individuals is more collagenase prevalence. This enzyme breaks down collagen, also resulting in wrinkles and skin folds. Restylane inhibits the break down, which improve the appearance and texture of skin.

CHOOSING BETWEEN RESTYLANE AND JUVÉDERM

Like Restylane, Juvéderm is also hyaluronic acid filler. However, Juvéderm is less firm. Both work in similar ways but Restylane is usually more appropriate for more noticeable contouring.  Consulting with a board certified dermatologist is advised to choose the most suitable product based on numerous factors.
