The recent and first-ever American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) Consumer Survey on Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures survey reveals that patients and prospective patients favor dermatologists over physicians with other medical specialties for cosmetic treatments and procedures overall. They also specifically favor dermatologic surgeons in nearly all the treatment categories they were asked about.
“Consumers know what we’ve been saying all along,” says said ASDS President Timothy C. Flynn, M.D. Dr. Flynn also notes that in addition to more Americans opting for cosmetic enhancements and treatments, they are specifically seeking out dermatologists for their training and expertise.

RESULTS FOUND ABOUT CONSUMER PREFERENCES FOR COSMETIC TREATMENTS AND PROCEDURES
Online, the ASDS asked more than 6,300 individuals in a blind survey about their opinions of cosmetic treatments and procedures. It also asked about preferences for the provider for specific treatments and procedures. Consumers were inquired about:
- Injectable fillers
- Wrinkle-relaxing injections
- Chemical peels
- Microdermabrasion
- Varicose and spider vein treatments
- Laser hair removal
- Tattoo removal
- Laser and light treatments
- Ultrasound and radiofrequency treatments
- Body sculpting
Dermatologists are preferred over other physicians for nine of ten treatments. This includes injectable fillers, wrinkle-relaxing injections, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, varicose and spider vein treatments, laser hair removal, tattoo removal, laser and light treatments, and ultrasound and radiofrequency treatments.
Body sculpting is the only procedure individuals prefer plastic and cosmetic surgeons over dermatologists. Despite the preference for a plastic and cosmetic surgeon, dermatologic surgeons are still highly regarded for body sculpting such as the minimally invasive tumescent liposuction.
The survey also reveals that consumers prefer dermatologic surgeons to dermatologists in nine of the 10 categories. Laser hair removal is the only one dermatologic surgeons are not the most requested. Laser hair removal is often performed by other physicians, spa personnel and office staff. Perhaps not surprising, laser hair removal also has the lowest satisfaction rate.
Another recent study published in Dermatologic Surgery reveals the demand for minimally invasive cosmetic treatments and procedures continues to grow. Researchers concluded their results from a 16-year period from 1995 to 2010. Highlights include:
- Wrinkle-relaxing injections have experienced the most growth
- A total of 35.5 million cosmetic treatments and procedures performed (an average of 2.2 million per year)
- Dermatologists performed 12 million cosmetic treatments in that timeframe Dermatologists also performed a significant portion of the 35.5 million identified as plastic surgery procedures
