Kelly Osbourne is a well recognized celebrity in American pop culture. She is known as a reality star on the Osbournes as well as a contestant  Dancing with the Stars. Most recently, she is hosting E! Fashion Police.

With her dad being Ozzy Osbourne (of rock and roll fame),  most people are not surprised that she has various tattoos on her body.  But now, she is embarking on the path of laser removal.

Like many celebrities, she regularly connects with fans on Twitter.  And recently, she posted a video which shows her experience and how a tattoo removal procedure with laser actually works. She announced, “Not looking forward to this afternoon… I’m getting my first tattoo removal! Its going to burn like the snap of 1000 rubber bands!”

The actual video shows the laser energy pulverizing away at green tattoo ink. While this was not pleasant for Kelly, she seemed to be coping rather well.

Why Is Kelly Removing Her Tattoos?

One of the most common reasons for celebrities choosing to remove tattoos is to erase the name of a former significant other.  But this is not a motive with Kelly.

The Los Angeles star is currently preparing for an upcoming wedding to Matthew Mosshart, her fiance.  So far, she has decided to target her keyboard tattoo. In retrospect, she is not sure why she chose this design since she does not play this instrument.

One might assume that her penchant for body art has to do with growing up in a famed rock family.  But ironically, she was quite aware of the fact that her parents would actually dislike the tattoos.  And as an act of rebellion, she deliberately decided to get them done.

Another one of her tattoos is more of an expression of endearment. Her and her brother, Jack, have matching designs with each other’s names.

How Common Is It For People To Undergo Laser Procedures For Tattoo Removal?

2012 statistics (from Harris Interactive) show that 21% of Americans have at least one tattoo. And of these individuals, 14% feel regret and decide to take action to have them removed.

While self expression is an important drive for young adults, this becomes less of a priority as they grow older.  What may have seemed appealing at first can later be perceived as an eye-sore. Feelings do change over time.  And this is perfectly normal.

According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, between 2010-2011, the number of laser procedures actually increased from 86,000 to 100,000.

Other celebrities have also made headlines for choosing laser tattoo removal. This includes Megan Fox who had the face of Marilyn Monroe on her arm,  Eva Longoria, Heidi Klum, Kathy Griffin and Nick Carter.

Is Laser the Best Option For Getting Rid of A Tattoo?

Tattoo pigment usually exists below the skin’s surface. Lasers are able to precisely target their location. Abrasive methods can damage the surface. And surgical removal with a scalpel is invasive with inevitable scarring. It is only recommended for small tattoos.
