Earlier this year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons released findings which support the growing preference for minimally invasive procedures. According to these numbers, seven minimally invasive procedures are performed for every surgery.

In Los Angeles and other locations,  the most popular procedures seem to be Botox and lasers.   Other treatments include dermal fillers like Radiesse, Juvederm and Restylane. Men and women alike are opting for quick results with little to no downtime.

Although the results of injection treatments are not permanent, results are more natural in appearance, not obvious looking. Most people are interested in minor tweaks instead of drastic changes.

According to other studies  published by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery,  there is a greater level of acceptance towards cosmetic procedures compared to five years ago.

  • 67% of Americans say that they would not feel embarrassed if their friends and family knew they underwent cosmetic treatments
  • 53% of women and 49% of men expressed approval for cosmetic procedures

However there are a few nuances to this overall picture. According to the University of Toronto:

  • Women seem to have a more judgmental attitude towards other women who chose to undergo anti aging procedures. This attitude is a little more severe when it comes to younger women making these choices.
  • Individuals who used non-medical anti aging treatments such as creams and lotions were perceived more favorably.
  • Botox is viewed as acceptable for individuals who are over the age of fifty.  But in reality, most procedures are performed on those who are 35-50.
  • People in their 40’s who choose anti-aging cosmetic procedures are regarded as being more vain than individuals in their 60’s.

It may be argued that society places a lot of pressure for men and women to look their very best. However many people make the decision to choose cosmetic procedures to simply feel better about their own appearance.

Although most people would probably not have noticed the lines around this patient’s eyes, she decided to have them addressed with Botox simply to make herself feel better.

Also more individuals are understanding that physiological factors in deeper skin layers play a major role in the youthful appearance of their skin.  Therefore, they view medical procedures as a more logical approach towards reversing the signs of aging, compared to using products and other surface treatments.
